Julian Curwin’s The Mango Balloon is a stripped-back chamber version of The Tango
Saloon, with a lighter sound bringing lounge, exotica and jazz to the larger band’s
tango/western blend. Volume 4 features special guest Matt McMahon – one of Australia’s
finest keyboardists, Matt is known for playing a wide range of music with the likes of
Vince Jones, Phil Slater and Joseph Tawadros, as well as his own ensembles.

Sheldon and label boss Julian Curwin. Sheldon is a classical soprano with a haunting,
mournful voice. On Crossing it comes backed by Curwin’s stately classical guitar
playing to create a record of fragile beauty. Anyone who has enjoyed the recent
reissues of early 20th Century Spanish musics by Death Is Not The End will enjoy this.

Umlaut feels a little close to the bone as a name for a band, but it gets a bit better
when you realise that main man Bär McKinnon (who you might know from Secret Chiefs 3
and Mr. Bungle) has a genuine one himself. This new EP Arunachala is kind of Easter
themed, which you don’t see so much. It’s an EP, but it's got seven tracks and almost
as many musical styles packed in there.
