History
Matinée Recordings is an independent pop record label based in Santa Barbara,
California. The label began in 1997 and in fifteen years has earned a reputation as one
of the leading indie labels in the world. In this time, Matinée has released nearly
150 records by 42 artists from ten different countries.
In its first three years, Matinée released limited edition records—mostly 7” singles
from internationally acclaimed acts including Bella Vista (USA), Ego (France), The
Fairways (USA), Harper Lee (England), Lovejoy (England), The Lucksmiths (Australia),
Monterey (USA), Sportique (England), Sweet William (Australia), and The Windmills
(England). In 1999, the label hosted the first Matinée live showcase aboard a boat in
Paris, followed by extensive US dates for The Lucksmiths.
Over the next few years, the label significantly expanded its international base with
new releases from celebrated indie bands including Airport Girl (England), The Guild
League (Australia), The Hermit Crabs (Scotland), The Liberty Ship (England), Math and
Physics Club (USA), Melodie Group (England), Pale Sunday (Brazil), The Pines (England),
Pipas (England), Simpático (Australia), Slipslide (England), Tender Trap (England),
Would-Be-Goods (England), and The Young Tradition (Sweden).
During this time, the label also curated a series of archival releases, working with
late 80’s English band The Visitors on a definitive retrospective compilation. Archival
releases followed from indie legends The Siddeleys, Razorcuts, Remember Fun, and
Brighter.
Capitalizing on a solid roster of English acts, Matinée continued expanding live
promotion of its artists with numerous label showcases in London. Matinée artists also
featured heavily on the international popfest scene, with bands regularly playing shows
in Madrid, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and towns inbetween.
The label celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007 with a showcase in California feat.
live favorites The Lucksmiths, Math and Physics Club, and The Guild League. It has
significantly expanded the artist roster since, signing popular new international
artists Azure Blue (Sweden), Bart and Friends (Australia), Bubblegum Lemonade
(Scotland), Cats on Fire (Finland), Champagne Riot (Denmark), Charlie Big Time
(England), The Electric Pop Group (Sweden), Northern Portrait (Denmark), and Strawberry
Whiplash (Scotland). As it approaches its 15th year, the label continues from strength
to strength with a loyal fan base, a collectable catalog, and a growing international
reputation.

A few years after the break-up of much-loved Australian indie stalwarts The Lucksmiths,
three quarters of the band quietly got together again as Last Leaves. With songwriter
and guitarist Marty Donald assuming vocal duties alongside longtime collaborators Louis
Richter (guitar) and Mark Monnone (bass), and joined by drummer extraordinaire Noah
Symons (Great Earthquake), they began work on a body of songs that – a few years later
again – finally finds release in their remarkable debut album ‘Other Towns Than Ours’
The album was recorded by relocated UK producer Gareth Parton (Foals, The Go! Team)
over the course of almost three years, between Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs and
the band’s base in the hills to the east of the city. Donald’s move there some years
ago is reflected in the satellite towns, country roads and mountainside motels of
‘Other Towns Than Ours’; as ever, a profound sense of place remains central to his
songwriting.

Math and Physics Club’s fourth studio album ‘Lived Here Before’ features all the
carefully constructed pop handicraft we’ve come to expect from these Pacific Northwest
lads, but also shows the band stretching confidently into new territory at a stage
when many bands would simply be retreading the same paths.
Working from a makeshift studio in the wilds of Snohomish, Washington, with fabled
grunge producer Chris Hanzsek (Soundgarden, Green River), the band recorded eleven
songs over four days in the company of Douglas firs and Swainson’s thrushes. Longtime
fans will still recognize the band’s upbeat sound set against often bittersweet
storytelling, but there’s also a darker, more world-weary undercurrent that feels
earned with the passage of time, or perhaps as a reflection of the times themselves.
Housed in a handsome six-panel eco-wallet with sleeve design by the band’s own Ethan
Jones, ‘Lived Here Before’ is a magnificent addition to the Math and Physics Club
discography.

Spanish band The Royal Landscaping Society formed in Seville in 2012 as a sol
project, then expanded into a band, and eventually shrunk to a duo with Cris Romero
on vocals, guitar, synths, and machines and David Vidal on bass. With an obvious
love for the breezier side of indiepop, the band mixes crystalline guitars and
electronics to create shimmery romantic pop that has earned comparisons to Sarah
Records legends Brighter and The Field Mice, among others.
In addition to live appearances at the Indietracks Festival and the Birmingham
Popfest, the band has released a clutch of celebrated songs on various international
labels over the years. The brilliant ‘Means of Production’ collects these various
songs into an incredibly cohesive album that will hopefully reach the bigger audience
the band rightly deserves.
